Zion National Park Utah

Located near Springdale, Utah Zion National Park was established as a National Park on November 19, 1919.

Zion National Park is comprised of 229 square miles of breathtaking, spectacular scenery. There are sharp sandstone cliffs which soar 2,000 feet above a maze of narrow canyons. These canyons are cut through the sandstone by the Virgin River

There are a number of hiking trails in Zion National Park.

Zion Narrows

The most challenging hiking trail is the Zion Narrows. It is 12.5 miles through a canyon, sometimes as narrow as 20 feet with vertical walls that are 2,000 feet high. The river is the trail as it meanders through gorges of sandstone arches, grottos, and soaring walls. The trail is on the river so you will have to do some wading and you may have to swim. This is a strenuous trail.

Emerald Pools

This a scenic hiking trail that children and adults will enjoy. It has waterfalls, pools, and monoliths. The trail can be hiked in a day. It is 3 miles round trip. This hiking area has three levels of difficulty. The Lower Pool is easy. The Middle Pool is moderate. The Upper Pool is moderately strenuous. The trail can be hiked year-round and the trails are well-maintained. The Emerald Pools trail was completed in 1925.

Canyon Overlook Trail

Zion National Park UtahIf you want a spectacular view of the lower Zion Canyon, this is a trail your will enjoy. The hiking time is an hour because the distance is one mile round trip. This is an easy trail for adults but moderate for kids. There are exposed cliffs so consider a fear of heights for this trail.

At Zion National Park, you can find trails that are easy, moderate, and strenuous. You will also find trails that require a great deal of experience because of their difficulty.

You can combine your vacation as a camping and hiking trip. The park has several campgrounds. The Watchman Campground accepts reservations. There are six primitive camp sites at Kolob Terrace for the outdoor enthusiasts. The East Zion Riverside RV Park has a number of amenities.

Safety is your responsibility. Make sure the trail you like is one that fits you physically and emotionally. You should have the proper gear for camping. A good pair of hiking boots is recommended. Before starting off alone on a hike, check the weather forecast. The area can have flashfloods.

The park's naturalists lead guided tours along some of the trails and also lead off-trail hikes through canyons from late March to November.
