Located near Springdale, Utah Zion
National Park was established as a National Park on November
19, 1919.
Zion National Park is comprised of 229 square miles of
breathtaking, spectacular scenery. There are sharp sandstone
cliffs which soar 2,000 feet above a maze of narrow
canyons. These canyons are cut through the sandstone by the
Virgin River
There are a number of hiking trails in Zion National
Park.
Zion Narrows
The most challenging hiking trail is the Zion Narrows. It is
12.5 miles through a canyon, sometimes as narrow as 20 feet
with vertical walls that are 2,000 feet high. The river is the
trail as it meanders through gorges of sandstone arches,
grottos, and soaring walls. The trail is on the river so you
will have to do some wading and you may have to swim. This is a
strenuous trail.
Emerald Pools
This a scenic hiking trail that children and adults will
enjoy. It has waterfalls, pools, and monoliths. The trail can
be hiked in a day. It is 3 miles round trip. This hiking area
has three levels of difficulty. The Lower Pool is easy. The
Middle Pool is moderate. The Upper Pool is moderately
strenuous. The trail can be hiked year-round and the trails are
well-maintained. The Emerald Pools trail was completed in
1925.
Canyon Overlook Trail
If you want a spectacular view of the lower
Zion Canyon, this is a trail your will enjoy. The hiking
time is an hour because the distance is one mile round
trip. This is an easy trail for adults but moderate for
kids. There are exposed cliffs so consider a fear of
heights for this trail.
At Zion National Park, you can find trails that are easy,
moderate, and strenuous. You will also find trails that require
a great deal of experience because of their difficulty.
You can combine your vacation as a camping and hiking trip.
The park has several campgrounds. The Watchman Campground
accepts reservations. There are six primitive camp sites at
Kolob Terrace for the outdoor enthusiasts. The East Zion
Riverside RV Park has a number of amenities.
Safety is your responsibility. Make sure the trail you like
is one that fits you physically and emotionally. You should
have the proper gear for camping. A good pair of hiking boots
is recommended. Before starting off alone on a hike, check the
weather forecast. The area can have flashfloods.
The park's naturalists lead guided tours along some of the
trails and also lead off-trail hikes through canyons from late
March to November.
If you are looking for a great outdoor vacation with
beautiful scenic views, a visit to Zion National Park will be
an experience you will not forget.
